Jesus and the Argonauts

This week's message is about dealing with the distractions of life that take us off course from the life Jesus has for us.  The main passage is 1 Peter 1:13-21.  This week's message was preached by pastor Scott Furrow at the First Baptist Church of San Diego on September 4, 2016.  It aired on the radio in San Diego on September 11, 2016.

Ancient Greeks told stories about an Island of beautiful women who sang a song that was so beautiful, it enticed sailors to change course and head toward the tantalizing melody.  These women were known as Sirens and their songs were irresistible to most people.  But they were deceptive.  The island was surrounded by rocky shores and the sailors would crash their ships and die before reaching the Sirens.

In our life today, there are many Siren songs, things that are so tempting they can draw us away from what is best for us - and they lead to death and destruction.  In Peter's day, there were many similar distractions for Christians and he writes to help us stay on course with following Jesus.  This message will help you focus on Christ and be consumed by the beauty of the Gospel in your life.

Modern Faith 11 - Gentle Courage

Modern Faith is our sermon series about the Fruit of the Spirit.

The subject this week is Gentleness and the main passage is Galatians 6:1-10.  This week's message was preached by pastor Scott Furrow at the First Baptist Church of San Diego on August 28, 2016.  It aired on the radio in San Diego on September 4, 2016.

Gentleness takes great courage.  Paul gives us an idea of some areas that God is working with us to develop this characteristic.  Gentleness in dealing with the sins of others, gentleness with how we handle each others burdens, and gentleness with ourselves when we examine our own lives.

Modern Faith 10 - Faithfulness and Confidence

Modern Faith is our sermon series about the Fruit of the Spirit.

The subject this week is Faithfulness and the main passages are 1 John 1:5-10 and Galatians 5:22-25. This week's message was preached by pastor Scott Furrow at the First Baptist Church of San Diego on August 21, 2016.  It aired on the radio in San Diego on August 28, 2016.

There is a difference between being religious and being faithful.  In some instance, there is a difference between believing in Jesus and actually believing Jesus.  The Holy Spirit is working on us to believe the truth that come through Jesus Christ - in Him there is no falsehood at all.

Modern Faith 9 - What is Goodness? Two Wrongs and a Right

Modern Faith is our sermon series about the Fruit of the Spirit.

The subject this week is Goodness and the main passages are Mark 10:17-18, 26-27, Micah 6:6-8, Matthew 22:37-40, and Galatians 5:22-25. This week's message was preached by pastor Scott Furrow at the First Baptist Church of San Diego on August 7, 2016.  It aired on the radio in San Diego on August 14, 2016.

"Who is Good?" Jesus asked the man... so how is "Goodness" a Fruit of the Spirit if no one is good, only God?  The Bible answers this question very well.  The book of Micah gives us 3 answers, 2 are the wrong answers, and 1 is the right answer.  It is the key to Goodness.

Modern Faith 7 - The Realities of Patience and Your Muttering Heart

Modern Faith is our sermon series about the Fruit of the Spirit.

The subject is Patience, or forbearance, and the main passage is James 5:7-11.This week's message was preached by pastor Scott Furrow on July 24, 2016.  It aired on the radio in San Diego on July 31, 2016.

Patience is something that many of us struggle with, especially when we are dealing with people or when circumstances don't go our way.  But patience is a huge deal - without it, we operate in a world that is not in reality.  The inner conversation we have with ourselves is often key to our ability to allow God to give us more patience so that we are more effective in ministry for Him.

Modern Faith 6 - What We Ought

Modern Faith is our sermon series about the Fruit of the Spirit.  This week's message was preached by pastor Scott Furrow on July 10, 2016.  After a week of many difficulties in our country, from corrupt politicians to violent acts, this is a service of lament and prayer at  the First Baptist Church.

This sermon continues in our series called Modern Faith, but it is an unplanned episode.  The week before was a difficult one in our country and as a church, we took time to lament and pray for our nation.  The discussion surrounds the difference between what we "ought" vs. what we "should" and how we've moved from the former to the latter in our society.  Therein lies a great deal of the root of the many problems we face as a nation and as a people.  The Bible also gives us an idea of what we "ought" to do, and there are three examples in this message.

USAGE OF THE WORD OUGHT:

Usage of the word Ought through 2010

Modern Faith 4: The Peace Formula

Modern Faith is our sermon series about the Fruit of the Spirit.  Today, we look at "Peace" as part of this fruit.  Our main passage is Philippians 4:4-9.

The opposite of peace is anxiety.  We're not talking about medical conditions, or just the day to day concerns of anyone's life.  We're talking about anxiety that is debilitating and worrisome.  The kind that so many of us struggle with in a world that is lacking Peace.  How then do we have the Peace of God?   Paul teaches us that it can be learned with the help of God.  This is not something that develops overnight - it is part of a process of change that the Holy Spirit does with us as we grow spiritually.
